What Is the Jeep Scrambler CJ-8 ?

Produced for the 1981 - 1986 model years, the Jeep Scrambler CJ-8 was a long-wheelbase variation of the Jeep CJ-7 with a 5 ft. pick-up truck box outfitted on the rear, creating a versatile hybrid of 80's utility and fun. Only 27,972 total examples were produced, and today these CJ's are climbing in value thanks to their quirky design and off-road pedigree. But, we still think Scramblers have a ton of room to run as early 80s sport utility vehicles continue to garner attention.

The Jeep Scrambler featured a striking 103.5 in. wheelbase, 10 in. longer than the CJ-7 (which was already 10 in. longer than its predecessor, the CJ-5). The CJ-8 also shared the same Dana 300 transfer case found in the CJ-7, which was a replacement to the BorgWarner #1339 QuadraTec and Dana 20 transfer cases utilized from '76-'79. The transfer case offers 2wd, and 4wd hi/lo options.

Additionally, the CJ-8 sported Dana 30 axles up front, and AMC 20 axles in the rear with manual front locking hubs.

Several engine options were available. It originally came standard with the 151 ci. GM I4, but this engine was replaced with the AMC 150 ci. I4 for the 1984 model year. A 258 ci. AMC I6 and 304 ci. AMC V8 were optional upgrades, although the 304 option was last available for the 1981 model year. The 258 I6 was an extremely popular option, and part of a long-running powerplant for Jeep, known for low cost, high reliability, and extreme torque.
