International Harvester built the Scout for one reason: to go anywhere, in any conditions, without complaint. They had been building trucks and agricultural equipment since 1902, and when they designed the Scout II they brought that same industrial thinking to a recreational 4x4. For 1976 specifically, International increased the Scout's maximum GVWR to 6,200 pounds, a move that also conveniently allowed them to avoid fitting catalytic converters. They also relocated the automatic shifter to the floor that year for the first time, giving the cabin a cleaner, more driver-focused layout. This one is finished in Glacier Blue with a dark blue cloth interior, four-wheel drive, and a trimmed dash with a Kenwood stereo, and it presents as a clean, honest example of one of the most respected off-road vehicles ever produced in America.

Under the hood is the 345 cubic inch V8 backed by the three speed automatic. International did not build performance engines. The 345 was designed to power dump trucks and school buses, which means it was engineered far beyond what a Scout would ever ask of it. It is low on horsepower and very high on torque, and built for durability above all else. It pulls from the bottom of the RPM range with authority and simply does not quit, which is why these engines are still running reliably in Scouts that have been driven hard for 50 years.

Inside, the dark blue cloth interior is clean and well matched to the exterior. The trimmed dash gives it a more finished look than a bare-bones Scout and the Kenwood stereo handles the audio. This is a comfortable and honest cabin for a truck that was never trying to be anything other than what it is.

Scout II values have been climbing steadily as collectors recognize the original for what it was, and the announcement of a new electric Scout has drawn even more attention to the early trucks, much the way the return of the Ford Bronco caused values on the original to spike. A Glacier Blue 345 V8 example in this condition is exactly what buyers who have been paying attention are looking for before prices move further.
