Overview
She was chosen for her looks and character: all mechanical, simple, and easy to fix anywhere. Nothing on her was bought to look good in a car park. Every item was chosen, fitted and then proven across a continent of sand, corrugations, altitude and heat.

The roof was cut for an Alu-Cab Hercules pop-top with a 270° awning. With custom-made cushions you can sit inside with the roof down. The rear has custom-built cabinetry, EMU gullwings on all four windows, all on one key, and Alu-Cab molle plates on the doors, so everything is stowed and nothing rattles. The cabin is insulated with Thinsulate and Dodo Mat, and the front seats are Scheel-Mann. Off-grid power comes from a 150 W roof-mounted solar panel feeding a Victron MPPT controller and inverter, with an Eberspächer diesel heater for cold nights and an Alpicool drawer fridge for everything else.
Up front there's an ARB bumper, Hella spotlights, a snorkel, and a Warn 9.5XP winch with 100 ft of Spydura synthetic rope. She rolls on BF Goodrich 265/75s on steel wheels, and an ARB on-board compressor handles tyre pressures.
Mechanically, a 1HZJ doesn't need much. It needs the right things done at the right time, and that's how we've looked after her. The injection pump was rebuilt and timed on the road. After we arrived in Cape Town, an experienced local overland outfit gave her a full service at 235,000 km: clutch rebuilt, master brake cylinder replaced, crank pulley and front seal replaced, wheel bearings repacked, and all fluids and belts done. OEM oil and fuel filters have been changed every 8,000 km, and both batteries are new in 2026. We used genuine Toyota or Terrain Tamer parts throughout.
She doesn't come as a bare truck with a price on the windscreen. She's handed over loaded with recovery gear, camp kit, safety equipment and the box of genuine Toyota spares we carried the whole way down. Only missing a driver.
