Signature Autosports has completed Project Big Sky, an extraordinary Flying Huntsman 6x6 built on a 1993 Land Rover Defender platform and comprehensively refined at the company’s Wilmington, North Carolina facility.

Showing 1,625 miles at the time of writing, Project Big Sky combines classic British utility architecture with a VMP-supercharged 5.0-liter Ford Coyote V8 producing a previously documented 700 horsepower, a Ford 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission, and a purpose-built six-wheel-drive system.

It is not subtle.

Then again, subtlety was never part of the assignment.

FROM 1993 DEFENDER TO 700 HORSEPOWER
The vehicle’s story begins with a 1993 Land Rover Defender platform that was transformed into the four-door Flying Huntsman 6x6 pickup configuration seen today.

Its documented history reaches back to April 2018, when Florida title records showed just 151 actual miles. By 2019, the Flying Huntsman had accumulated only 807 miles.

Its evolution, however, was far from complete.

The vehicle was subsequently entrusted to Hyper Offroad & Performance, where an extensive mechanical and electrical redevelopment addressed the wiring, ECU, suspension and driveline geometry, engine positioning, fluid-delivery systems, and powertrain installation. A custom 2.5-inch exhaust system was also fabricated during that redevelopment.

Following the work, the Flying Huntsman was documented at a reported 700 horsepower from its VMP-supercharged 5.0-liter Ford Coyote V8, delivered through Ford’s 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission.

PURPOSE-BUILT SIX-WHEEL ENGINEERING
Project Big Sky is far more than a cosmetic six-wheel conversion.

The current driveline combines a heavy-duty Land Rover front axle with tandem Ford 9-inch rear axles, supported by a heavy-duty transfer case and Detroit TrueTrac traction hardware. FOX 2.0 Performance Series dampers control the chassis, while heavy-duty Wilwood disc brakes provide the stopping power demanded by a vehicle of this size and performance.

Six General Grabber X3 LT275/70R18 Load Range E tires provide the footprint, with a full-size seventh spare carried in the rear bed. A WARN front winch, raised snorkel, RIGID roof-mounted LED lighting, and Project Kahn composite exterior components reinforce the vehicle’s genuine off-road intent.

The truck also incorporates an sPOD HD accessory-control system and a Fluidyne high-performance auxiliary cooler / heat exchanger as part of its extensive supporting hardware.

A COMPLETE EXTERIOR REFRESH
Signature Autosports has fully repainted Project Big Sky in the same matte gray finish that has long defined the truck’s visual identity.

Rather than changing the character of the vehicle, the repaint resets the presentation and gives the dramatic six-wheel bodywork the finish it deserves.

Door, bonnet, and related exterior hardware have also been replaced with black anodized billet-aluminum components, creating a cleaner and more deliberate contrast against the matte gray bodywork. Additional cosmetic refinements throughout the exterior sharpen the presentation while retaining the unmistakable presence of the original Flying Huntsman design.

DISTRESSED PINECONE, THROUGHOUT
Inside, Signature Autosports completely reworked the cabin around Distressed Pinecone leather.

The material now carries throughout the interior—including the seating, dashboard, and center console—bringing warmth, texture, and a more bespoke character to an otherwise purpose-driven environment.

Heated and cooled Recaro seating, an Alcantara headliner, heated windshield, Dakota Digital instrumentation, and integrated navigation remain part of the equipment package. The audio system includes a JL Audio XD500/3v2 three-channel amplifier and Alpine Type-R subwoofer, adding another layer of refinement without distracting from the truck’s mechanical character.

AN EXTRAORDINARY NEXT CHAPTER
With approximately 1,625 miles indicated, Project Big Sky remains exceptionally low-mileage even by specialty-vehicle standards.

Its history is equally unusual: a 1993 Land Rover Defender platform transformed into a Flying Huntsman 6x6, extensively redeveloped by Hyper Offroad & Performance, featured in the automotive media, and now fully repainted, retrimmed, and refined by Signature Autosports.
