Original Factory Double Cab | Td5 | Galvanized Chassis & Bulkhead | Arizona Titled
This 2001 Land Rover Defender 110 is an original factory Double Cab Pickup powered by the 2.5-liter Td5 turbo-diesel engine.
It is important to distinguish this truck from the many Defenders that have subsequently been converted into double cabs. This vehicle left Land Rover in Double Cab Pickup configuration and remains in that configuration today, making it a relatively uncommon Defender in the United States.
Sourced in Devon
Sonoran Rovers purchased the truck directly in Devon, England. Before purchase, we carried out several test drives and inspections to establish whether it was a suitable vehicle for export to the United States. The truck drove particularly well and the extensive work completed by its previous owner made it a strong candidate. Following importation to Arizona, we have driven it approximately 500 miles as part of our normal Sonoran Rovers shakedown process. It has performed extremely well throughout.
Extensive Previous Rebuild
The previous owner carried out a substantial rebuild of the Defender in approximately 2012.
Work included:
- Galvanized replacement chassis
- Galvanized bulkhead
- Galvanized door pillars
- Stainless steel nuts and bolts used extensively during reassembly
- Galvanized rear body cappings
These are significant upgrades on a Defender of this age and address many of the corrosion-prone areas normally associated with UK-market trucks.
Td5 Drivetrain
Power comes from Land Rover’s 2.5-liter Td5 five-cylinder turbo-diesel, paired with a five-speed manual transmission and permanent four-wheel drive. The ECU has been remapped by Td5 Inside. The result is a noticeably stronger truck than a standard Td5. Acceleration is very good for a Defender and it will comfortably cruise at normal American highway speeds with additional power available when required. During our approximately 500 miles of Arizona driving, the drivetrain has performed very well.
On-Road and Off-Road Driving
This is one of those Defenders that simply feels properly sorted from behind the wheel. Steering, suspension and drivetrain behavior are predictable, and the truck feels stable at highway speeds despite its larger tires. We’ve also driven it off road in Arizona, where the Double Cab configuration works particularly well. It remains comfortable and controlled while retaining the capability expected from a Defender 110.
Exterior
The body retains some age-related paint patina rather than having been recently refinished. Overall it presents well and suits the character of the truck.
Exterior details include:
- 285/75R16 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires
- Checker plate bonnet
- Galvanized rear cappings
- Raised air intake/snorkel
- Side steps
- Defender alloy wheels
- Double Cab Pickup rear bed
The combination of the galvanized components and slightly aged paint gives it the appearance of a Defender that can actually be used rather than a freshly restored truck that needs to be treated carefully.
Why This Defender
For us, the attraction of this particular truck is straightforward. It is a genuine factory 110 Double Cab Pickup, it has the Td5 engine, and a previous owner has already invested heavily in replacing some of the most important corrosion-prone structural components. We then had the opportunity to inspect and drive it extensively before purchase in the UK and have subsequently put another approximately 500 miles on it in Arizona. It is a Defender we would be comfortable driving regularly, taking on the highway or using off road.
