The Model
In February 2019, Toyota introduced the Land Cruiser Heritage Edition at the Chicago Auto Show as a tribute to the 60th anniversary of the FJ40’s introduction to the U.S. market. Production was limited to just 1,200 units, and all Heritage Editions were configured as five-seat models, deleting the third row to reduce weight and free up additional cargo space.
For an added premium over the standard Land Cruiser, the Heritage Edition included several visual and functional upgrades. Among the most notable were 18-inch bronze-colored BBS wheels, vintage-style exterior badging, a Yakima MegaWarrior cargo basket, and the deletion of the standard running boards for improved ground clearance.
At its core, the 200 Series Toyota Land Cruiser is powered by a 5.7L V8 producing 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. As with many modern Toyota trucks and SUVs, the powertrain developed a reputation for durability and long-term reliability. But capability has always been the Land Cruiser’s real calling card.
Every 200 Series Land Cruiser came standard with full-time four-wheel drive, a 2-speed transfer case, and Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS). That hydraulic system automatically adjusts sway bar function based on terrain, improving articulation off-road while helping maintain stability on pavement. The Land Cruiser also offered crawl control, multi-terrain traction management, and off-road electronics designed to improve control on difficult surfaces.
In Heritage Edition trim, the Land Cruiser offered 8.9 inches of ground clearance along with strong approach, departure, and breakover angles in stock form. Built examples like this one take that capability even further, transforming an already formidable SUV into a serious long-range overland platform.
