A 392 Hemi changes the character of an early JK dramatically, and this 2008 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon has the documentation to show how the conversion was done. The original owner commissioned Burnsville Off Road West to complete the 6.4L Hemi and automatic-transmission swap in May 2013 at 42,687 miles, along with an AEV 3.5-inch lift, Rock Slide Engineering automatic power side steps, upgraded braking, AEV front bumper, WARN winch, additional cooling, and supporting installation work. Now showing approximately 108,100 miles, the Jeep has covered roughly 65,000 miles since the conversion while retaining the Rubicon's 4:1 Rock-Trac transfer case, Dana 44 axles, 4.10 gearing, front and rear lockers, and electronic sway-bar disconnect. It has remained with the same Colorado owner since new and has seen mostly road and winter use rather than hard recreational wheeling.
- Burnsville Off Road West 392 Conversion: Burnsville Off Road West completed the Hemi conversion in May 2013 with the Jeep showing 42,687 miles. The invoice documents a 6.4L VVT Hemi conversion, automatic-transmission installation package, custom wiring, cooling upgrades, AEV suspension, brake work, bumper/winch hardware, hood installation, and related fabrication, with more than $40,000 invoiced at the time.
- Approximately 65,000 Miles Since the Swap: Unlike a freshly completed conversion with little history behind it, this setup has accumulated roughly 65,000 miles since installation. The seller describes the engine and transmission as 2012 crate components and says Burnsville Off Road West tuned the Hemi to an estimated 500 horsepower.
- Rubicon Hardware Still Underneath: The original 4:1 Rock-Trac transfer case remains in place, backed by factory Dana 44 front and rear axles, 4.10 gearing, Tru-Lok electronic lockers, and the electronic front sway-bar disconnect. Those were defining pieces of the 2008 Unlimited Rubicon package and remain particularly relevant with the added V8 power.
- AEV Suspension, Teraflex Brakes & Recent Front-End Work: An AEV 3.5-inch lift with heavier front springs was installed during the conversion to account for the Hemi's additional weight. More recently, the front end received substantial work including ball joints, axle U-joints, tie-rod components, front axle seals, steering and alignment work, plus a Teraflex big-brake setup with new front rotors and calipers; subsequent work included a new drag link and track bar.
- One Owner From New: The seller purchased the Jeep new and has owned it continuously since 2008. CARFAX likewise identifies it as a one-owner Colorado vehicle with 38 service-history records, no reported accidents or damage, no structural damage, no odometer concerns, and no open recalls.
About the First-Generation JK Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
The JK generation marked a major expansion of the Wrangler formula, introducing the four-door Unlimited while retaining body-on-frame construction, solid axles, removable doors and tops, and proper low-range four-wheel drive. The Rubicon sat at the top of the capability hierarchy with Dana 44 axles at both ends, electronic locking differentials, a 4:1 Rock-Trac transfer case, electronic front sway-bar disconnect, rock rails, skid protection, and dedicated off-road suspension.
From the factory, a 2008 Rubicon used Jeep's 3.8L V6, rated at 202 horsepower and 237 lb-ft of torque. That original engine and 42RLE automatic are no longer present here. In their place is a 6.4L Hemi and 65RFE automatic, while the Rubicon transfer case, axle hardware, gearing, lockers, and underlying chassis capability remain.
That combination makes this example less about building another lifted JK and more about preserving the parts that made the Rubicon desirable while addressing the early JK's biggest weakness: power.
