For sale by private party in Hailey, Idaho, this 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser 40 Series pairs classic Toyota styling with a Chevrolet 5.3L V8, a 4L60E automatic transmission, and an extensive body-off restoration. Finished in its original Dune Beige with contrasting Cygnus White accents, it retains the familiar character of a vintage Land Cruiser while adding updated power, front disc brakes, refreshed steering, and modern audio. The odometer displays 627 miles; true mileage is unknown (TMU).
Purchased by the current owner in November 2025, the Land Cruiser was rebuilt by a master technician with 22 years of experience. According to the seller, he performed all work except the paint, which was also professionally completed. The project included replacement body panels, refinished chassis components, revised wiring, custom upholstery, and new seals throughout.
Chevrolet V8 Power: The previously installed Chevrolet 327 and three-speed transmission were removed in favor of a Chevrolet 5.3L V8 and 4L60E automatic sourced from a Chevy 1500 pickup. An Advance Adapters kit connects the updated drivetrain to the original, overhauled Toyota transfer case, retaining four-wheel drive. Both driveshafts were modified and rebuilt to accommodate the new drivetrain. A Painless body harness and an LS swap engine harness were modified for a cleaner installation, with attention paid to integrating the engine and body wiring.
Body-Off Restoration: After the drivetrain was test-fitted, the body was removed and stripped of its paint. The seller reports that all rust was repaired, with replacement panels including both front fenders, both rear fenders, the left-side vent panel, a rocker panel, and an apron. The rear door sill had also been replaced. The body was epoxy primed and finished in PPG acrylic single-stage paint in its original Dune Beige, code 416. The frame was cleaned and painted, while the fiberglass roof was stripped, repaired where needed, epoxy primed, and refinished in Cygnus White, code 012. All door and glass seals were replaced, along with the windshield. Stainless steel fasteners were used throughout the body, and updated polyurethane body mounts were installed with new hardware.
Refreshed Chassis and Steering: A 4 in. suspension lift with new springs and shocks provides additional clearance, while rebuilt steering knuckles and front disc brakes update the chassis. Factory drum brakes remain at the rear. The existing Ford steering box, sourced from a Lincoln Continental, was refreshed and cleaned. New steering components were installed, including the steering shaft, and the steering column was overhauled with new bearings. Rough Country 16x8 wheels were painted Cygnus White to complement the roof and fitted with Falken Wildpeak Rubitrek tires described by the seller as approximately 32 in. tall and 9.50 in. wide.
Custom Cabin and Audio: The cabin combines period Toyota details with practical upgrades. A bench seat sourced from a mid-1980s Toyota pickup joins the rear jump seats, with custom upholstery in high-quality vinyl selected for durability. The bench seat frame, jump seat frames, and factory roll cage were sandblasted, epoxy primed, and painted in PPG factory black. Heat and sound insulation covers the floor beneath a heavy-duty PVC covering, while a reproduction headliner matches the original color and fitment. The instrument surround, glove box, and ashtray were refinished in Cygnus White, and dash pads from a version without a factory radio were fitted. The dash was modified to accept a double-DIN Kenwood receiver with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a backup camera. Audio equipment includes two Kenwood speakers in the front kick panels, a 10 in. subwoofer beneath the seat, and two marine speakers at the rear of the cabin.
Classic Details, Useful Updates: A new OEM Toyota front bumper preserves the traditional appearance, while a custom swing-away rear bumper incorporates a 2 in. receiver for a bike rack, ski rack, or small trailer. The grille bezel was powder coated in Cygnus White to match the roof and wheels. The seller reports using numerous new OEM parts, including sun visors, exterior lamps, door locks and handles, and the interior lamp. Classic-style headlamp assemblies contain LED bulbs, with LED reverse, brake, and turn-signal assemblies also fitted.
This Land Cruiser brings together an extensive restoration and a substantial drivetrain update without losing its vintage appearance. Original-color paint, white steel-style wheels, a contrasting roof, and familiar Toyota interior details give it a cohesive look, while the 5.3L V8, automatic transmission, front disc brakes, and modern audio add everyday convenience.
The depth of the work extends beyond paint and upholstery. Body panel replacement, rebuilt driveshafts, refreshed steering, revised wiring, new seals, and updated body mounts make this a comprehensive project completed by an experienced technician.
