Overview
This is a rare one: a thoroughly well thought-out off-road build that'll fall into just about any role you could ask of it. The flat bed is equally perfect for camping gear or hauling a fridge; the Old Man Emu springs lift it just enough to clear the 33s without making it feel like an awkward monster truck; and with the interior refresh, it's a pretty pleasant and old-school feeling Toyota rig.
The work was completed by ACC Garage in Atlanta, Georgia in 2020 when the truck had 59,000 miles. The truck was totally reworked with refreshed mechanics, cosmetics, and more.
The low-mile drivetrain was left untouched, but from the frame down, the suspension and axles were upgraded for the 33s. Old Man Emu's 2.5" lift springs ride well, paired with a matched set of Old Man Emu shocks. It does retain the OEM push-pull steering, so you'll have to get used to a little old school bump steer, but given what it is, it handles and rides very well for a leaf-sprung, solid-axle truck. In back, there's an electric locker for excellent traction in 2wd or 4wd; and in the front axle is an auto-locking Spartan locker.
Exterior-wise, the flat bed is the first draw. The previous owner drew it up and designed it himself before having it fabricated by ACC Garage out of 1/8th-inch plate. There' s plenty of attachment points for straps and the side bars emulate old bed stakes while helping to keep cargo secure. To keep it Toyota-centric, FJ-40 tail lamps were used, as well. It has great clearance overall, being dove tailed and tucked up tight; and everyone who's seen it appreciates how it blends into the cab's tapered bodylines near the rockers. SR5 doors were swapped on to bring over their vent windows too, and 33x10.5" BFG K02 all-terrains wrap around FJ-40 steelies, painted body color.
Inside, the seats were re-covered in a custom houndstooth pattern, new carpets were installed, and where needed the plastics were replaced and restored. A Sony touch screen head unit with Bluetooth was installed, and it's backed by 4" Kenwood 2-way drivers in the dash, Kicker 6.5" 2-way drivers in the rear speaker box, with a single Kicker 10" sub-woofer powered by a MB Quart amp. It's a punchy, but overall clean sounding system that only overpowers that tiny single cab if you crank up the EQ's bass settings — dealer's choice, but a flexible system. Really, the only thing we'd change is the addition of A/C — which is something our shop can install at your request. Contact us for a quote.
Overall, this thing grabs attention wherever it goes, and it has the right parts to do whatever you want with it. We'd change almost nothing, and would enjoy it for trail riding, or for working around homebase, or even just for cruisin' around town. Or maybe a trip across Moab...
