This Hilux Surf is everything you want, and many enthusiasts will consider it the holy grail!

Exterior Overview
This Hilux Surf is everything you want, and many enthusiasts will consider it the holy grail! That’s because this rig is diesel, manual, and Four Wheel Drive, which is the holy trinity of Surf specifications. Fresh off a recent service, this SSR-G is offered with only 151k verified and documented miles on the clock, which means this terrific Toyota is barely broken in. While the desirable specs of this truck are undeniable, the aesthetics are equally as good. Finished in a classic Everest Green (6X7), this special 1997 Surf is adorned by an OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM rear spoiler, OEM Bashbar with integrated IPF fogs, OEM rear bumper garnish, chrome taillight bezels, TERZO roof basket, RV Inno crossbars, privacy tint, and refinished 16″ alloy wheels. Aside from a few minor imperfections, the body is in good nick, and this turn-key truck would be at home on the trails and can pull double duty at your local Cars&Coffee. Tough, reliable, efficient, and capable, this Japanese Classic is hard to find, and we know the new owner will surely appreciate it!

Interior Overview
The cabin is simple, ergonomic, and nicely equipped. Toyota made dual SRS airbags, ABS, and additional side impact protection standard for this third-generation model. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and the center stack is close by and within arm’s reach.  An Eclipse headunit pumps out the tunes and is mounted below the automatic climate control system. Piping hot heat and cold A/C are on hand. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the side and rear glass powers down, and a large optional moonroof can tilt and retract to supplement air flow. Next to the moonroof controls is an OEM field monitor, which displays data about the outside conditions in case you lose cell service. Power folding mirrors and power locks work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The rear bench split folds and can 4-way recline for optimum rear seat comfort. They can also tumble forward and fold flat to accommodate large cargo. The Moon Mist gray cloth is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The headliner and door cards are in good nick, and aside from some light carpet stains, the interior has survived remarkably well. Even an OEM air purifier and a spare key are included with the purchase of this terrific truck.

Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this body-on-frame baddie is ready to take on the toughest terrain. Power comes from an incredible 3.0L turbodiesel, which is fresh off an oil and filter service. Two new 12V batteries aid ignition, and the KZN185 churns to life promptly with the twist of the key. A new fuel filter keeps unwanted contaminants out of the four-banger, and we replaced the engine air filter as part of our tune-up. We noticed the intake crossover tube was cracked, and so we replaced that while the Surf was on the lift. The 1KZ-TE is linked to a five-speed manual gearbox. It’s a hoot to row up and down the gears, and the driver has a level of engagement and control absent from slushbox-equipped models. Gear changes lack any hitches or grinds, and torque is fed through a selective transfer case. For top-tier fuel economy and the best straight-line performance, RWD is the ticket, but when the going gets tough, 4WD can be engaged on the fly. For low traction scenarios, an optional center locking differential can fix the power split 50/50 front and rear and a low range can be utilized, too. This Surf hustles up to highway merging speeds without breaking a sweat and can slow down promptly when called upon. The long wheelbase is ideal for high-speed stability, and one of our trained techs has reworked the suspension to deliver a premium ride. New front shocks were installed, and since we were in there, we added a set of new front lower control arms and new front swaybar bushings. The steering system was also revamped. We rebuilt the rack, installed new rack bushings and boots, and flushed the system out properly. An alignment was then dialed in with new inner and outer tie rods to make adjustments buttery smooth. The bullet-hole style wheels were then wrapped in new 31″ Falken tires. The new rubber looks mean, quells road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
