The Prado was designed as a agile light duty Land Cruiser. Able to fit into a much needed SUV market gap. Larger than the US 4runner model but not as big as the Full size Land Cruiser, the Prado hit a sweet spot for consumers. Popular luxury options found on these Prado were; Weatherproof seat covers, Premium sound, Automatic climate control, second row climate control, Turbo Diesel engines. Specifically the intercooled 1KZ-TE Turbo diesel was the premium option for this vehicle. With ample amounts of torque and consistent power due to its intercooled turbo this was the clear choice for particular owners. Its engine and automatic transmission are simple but robust, giving control and flexibility to overcome rough terrain or long stretches of highway. The Manual 3 speed t-case also helped to give the driver peace of mind that if things got unruly they had the ability to select advanced drivetrain.
